What is CPR?
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) is a procedure used for victims whose hearts have stopped beating - Sudden Cardiac Arrest.
An ambulance should be called immediately upon recognising Cardiac Arrest, i.e. victim is collapsed, unresponsive and not breathing normally. You should initiate CPR immediately upon recognising this emergency.
CPR involves the provision of artificial breathing with Mouth to Mouth breathing and external chest compressions. External chest massage manually compresses the heart to provide blood flow to the brain while mouth to mouth breathing provides vital oxygen to the vital organs. CPR buys time for the victim while awaiting more advanced help to arrive so that measures can be applied to restart the heart, such as defibrillation. Defibrillators are more successful in restoring normal heart rhythm when good quality CPR has been initiated at the point of collapse and continued until the victim shows signs of response.
CPR can buy vital minutes for the person, as long as it is applied immediately and effectively. Many experts agree that it is the most important skill for people to know and use in order to save lives.
