Galway Joins Global Red Light Districts!!

Croí goes Red for World Heart Day

Friday September 29th is World Heart Day and this weekend Galway City will join with cities across the world in lighting landmark City buildings in Red as part of a global campaign to raise awareness of heart disease.

In Ireland, local  Heart & Stroke Charity Croi are part of a global alliance of heart organisations who are affiliated to the World Heart Federations campaign of ’25 by 25’ – aiming to reduce the burden of heart disease by 25% by the year 2025. In Galway this weekend, the Croi Heart & Stroke Centre in Newcastle will be lit up in red and will be joined by other city landmarks such as; the Browne Doorway in Eyre Square; the Aula Maxima, NUIG; the Meyrick Hotel, Eyre Square; the Bons  Secours Hospital, Renmore and the Galway Clinic, Doughiska.

In Ireland, cardiovascular disease remains the cause of one-third of all deaths and one in five premature deaths. Equally, cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death and disability in the world. Over 17.5 million people die from cardiovascular disease every year. Of these deaths, heart attacks are responsible for 7.3 million deaths and stroke is responsible for 6.2 million. By 2030, the death rate is expected to rise to 23 million. The World Heart Federation hopes that by encouraging people to reduce their risk factors, such as smoking; an unhealthy diet, high blood pressure and physical inactivity, global mortality from non-communicable (i.e. non-infectious) diseases can be reduced by 25% by 2025.

Speaking about the ‘Go Red Campaign’, Croi’s Neil Johnson says “given that up to 80% of cardiovascular disease is preventable, the aim of the ‘Go Red’ campaign is to start a conversation about what can be done to reduce the impact of heart disease and stroke in our community and across the globe. We are delighted to see Galway joining this campaign by lighting buildings in red this Friday and throughout the weekend – joining cities across the world in a common mission”.
